Why Electronic Tech Manuals Are Being Adopted

Increasingly, defense and industrial organizations are adopting electronic tech manuals (ETMs) based on SGML markup language. This format offers the following advantages:

  • Convenience: maintenance procedures from a variety of manuals are accessible through a single computer interface rather than an unwieldy collection of paper documents.

  • Ease of updates: changing procedures are easily integrated into electronic manuals through use of SGML tagging language.

  • Improved productivity: SGML automatically formats information, allowing workers to focus on content rather than presentation.

  • Reusability of data: SGML files can be used to produce paper or electronic documents without reentry.

  • Portability of data: the same data sets can be distributed through a variety of formats, including World Wide Web pages, CD-ROMs, Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals, electronic mail, database publishing, diagnostic/expert systems, etc.
